As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different.

This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there is! It's time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper? Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber? Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement. Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates. Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plonking down the Benjamines on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course. There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open. How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy? Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day. My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running. OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes. Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre. Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.

Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip. You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine. THIS is the new American Christmas tradition. Forward this to everyone on your mailing list -- post it to discussion groups -- throw up a post on Craigslist in the Rants and Raves section in your city -- send it to the editor of your local paper and radio stations, and TV news departments. This is a revolution of caring about each other, and isn't that what Christmas is about?

We recently met Elizabeth Edwards, chief Executive Office and Founder of 1stAngel Arts Magazine on Google+ and have found that we have a lot in common. She is a delightful person and her online magazine is a reflection of not only herself but all of the wonderful artists and creative people in her network. Based in the U.K. she founded her own company after running many sites for MSN many years ago. This quickly bored her and she wanted to set out and pursue her many loves in life. Like us, she enjoys nature, foraging, animals and things with two wheels. :) I highly recommend checking out her site and if you're on G+ you might want to circle her as well!

Amy Martin, executive director of Earth Rhythms, relates: "This event is an outgrowth over the group's long-time relationship with several 100+ year old elm trees behind the Bath House Cultural Center, where we have held many festivals. When the trees were cut down due to ill health, Earth Rhythms commemorated one by having artist Julia Schloss paint a butterfly on the stump. It was eventually cut off and the slab turned into an art table for the facility. Another tree was honored with a "Goodbye to a Tree" service before it was cut down. Both were so well received that CommuniTREE was a natural outgrowth."

TREES: SOMETHING TO CELEBRATE

This year, 2011, has been designed by the United Nations as the International Year of the Forests (http://www.celebrateforests.com/) A Celebrate Forests campaign has been created for this by National Association of State Foresters (NASF), the USDA Forest Service, and the American Forest Foundation (AFF).

Throughout history trees have been revered and seen as sacred symbols of power, wisdom, healing, fertility and even life itself. The World Tree or Tree of Life is found in virtually every culture and religion, symbolizing the union of heaven and earth and the interconnection of life. Trees teach us to grow our roots in fertile soil and reach for our dreams while reminding us to live in balance and harmony.

Trees are anchors of most ecosystems, stabilizing soil and preventing erosion while filtering pollutants from rain and ground water. Worldwatch Institute estimates at least 321 million acres of trees need to be planted just to restore and maintain the productivity of soil and water resources. Trees produce half of the atmosphere's oxygen, while the average tree absorbs of 13 pounds CO2 each year. Shade from trees can reduce utility bills for air conditioning by 15 to 50 percent.

Dallas area neighborhoods with mature trees can be up to 11 degrees cooler than new neighborhoods without trees, and a one-degree rise in temperature equals a 2% increase in peak electricity consumption; and cities are 5 to 9 degrees warmer than rural areas, with 3% to 8% of summer electric use going to compensate for this urban "heat island" effect. New website with easy-to-find water-wise drought tips

COLLEGE STATION – The Texas AgriLife Extension Service has launched a new
website called Water Education in Texas (http://agrilife.org/drought/), solely
for the purpose of providing homeowners and producers with easy-to-find
water-wise drought tips.

“We found that the longer this historical drought hangs on, the more
information is generated to help Texans cope with it,” said Dr. Pete Gibbs,
AgriLife Extension associate director at College Station. “The trouble is,
we’re now drowning in a virtual sea of drought-related information. To stem
the flow, AgriLife Communications has siphoned off only the most pertinent
information that’s been submitted by our experts. This information has been
updated, then further edited down to provide the public with just what they need
to know.”

Gibbs said the site is easy to navigate because it has only three main
categories, which are easily accesses by a single click of the mouse. The
site’s categories are “Your Home,” which deals with everything from leaky
faucets to washing machines; “Lawn and Garden,” which addresses topics
including drip irrigation and watering trees, and “Agriculture and
Wildlife,” which offers tips on livestock, crops, fish and wildlife.

The information is offered in short, bulleted single sentences with a key word
or phrase embedded within the text for those seeking more in-depth information
on that particular topic, Gibbs said.

“Our main goal is to provide the best information possible that people can
actually use,” Gibbs said. “You can have the best information in the world,
but if your clientele can’t find it or don’t know it exists, it’s pretty
much worthless.”

Addressing Dallas' Urban Heat Island Effect

What is the Urban Heat Island?

Like many metropolitan areas, Dallas’ is affected by an Urban Heat
Island (UHI), which is caused by the large concrete areas that are
warmer than the natural rural areas. Sometimes there is a 10-12 degree
temperature difference between the inner urban and rural areas. By its
nature, concrete, asphalt and buildings tend to absorb heat, and a
lack of trees as well as other plant life prevents natural cooling
from occurring. Additionally, the absence of vegetation that naturally
removes pollutants from the air can lead to poor air quality.

The committee is working with various city departments,
including Dallas’ Environment Quality Department on reducing the UHI
effect. In 1995, Texas Christian University professor, Dr. Ken Morgan,
conducted the city’s first urban heat island study, which showed a
large section of central and downtown Dallas having temperatures
several degrees warmer than the surrounding suburbs and countryside.
In 2009, the Environmental Protection Agency commissioned its own
updated study on Dallas’ urban heat island areas providing further
research on this issue. This heat effect can impact not only Dallas’
environment, but also its quality of life by having hotter than normal
temperatures, higher energy bills, and poorer air quality.

Trees Can Cool Dallas

Reducing the urban heat island affect is challenging task; however,
one effective tool shown to lower urban temperatures and improve air
quality is the planting of trees. In fact, the 1995 study also
revealed that Oak Cliff, and its tree covered neighborhoods, had one
of the coolest temperatures compared to the rest of the city. Trees
can have a positive effect on urban heat island areas.

How Can Trees Reduce Dallas Temperatures?

Trees have many qualities well suited to reduce the urban heat island
affects:

Large trees can provide shade to block the sun’s heat.
Trees have a “moisture emitting” process, otherwise known as
evapotranspiration that cools the urban air temperature by releasing
moisture.
Trees need carbon dioxide to survive, and through its “breathing” or
photosynthesis process, significant amounts of carbon dioxide and
other pollutants are removed, such as sulfur dioxide or nitrogen oxide.
Taken together, trees can help cool urban temperatures and cleanse the
air, which improves Dallas’ quality of life.

What is UFAC doing to curb the Urban Heat Island?

UFAC is helping to reduce the UHI effect, by encouraging various tree
planting projects across Dallas - especially in the concrete laden
parts of our city. The Adopt-A-Median project, increased planting in
city parks and street medians, inclusive of other key tree planting
projects and obtaining funding and support for such projects are some
of the ways UFAC is helping to restore trees to Dallas urban areas and
reducing the heat island effect.

So, yeah, I was messing around with Windows Live Movie Maker and put together this video of some of the Pyrography pieces Emily and I have done in the past year or so set to the awesome music of Kyle MacConnell who we first met at Health and Harmony House when he was performing live for an open mic night there. Then later he also provided the live music for an Art Auction held there which is when we asked his permission to use some of his music for a project like this.
Anyway, here's the result:

There is also a paintings one in the works but Em has 6 more paintings (I think she said 6) at any rate there's some new stuff in the studio that she's not quite ready to unveil yet. When those are ready we'll add them to the paintings video and get it posted up. So, enjoy and please share! :)

Well, The Girl Show is an annual show by ArtLoveMagic which is dedicated to all the talented local women. Creative sisterhoods of art, fashion, music, poetry, dance, photography and sculpture are featured in this one night celebration. For 2011 girlShow will be on Saturday, JULY 23rd, from 8pm to 12am.

LIFE in Deep Ellum at 2803 Taylor Street, Dallas, TX 75226 will be hosting again this year, with one of the premier stages in the Deep Ellum area, an inviting lounge area, and lots of room so we can come out and bask in the light of these creative sisters of Dallas.

Un-Named Painting

Emily says that sometimes she has to really think about how a piece of art should be done and other times it just flows out like a vision. A gift from the muses if you will or as she put it in a recent interview for Kindred Images "Sometimes things are easy enough to just start showing up on the canvas until they become complete."

Such was the case with this untitled work shown. It just started to flow out onto the canvas as if it was somehow meant to be. We ran a contest afterwards for awhile to see if someone could help us come up with a name for the piece but alas no entries were made although some people commented that there was so much symbology at work in it that finding an appropriate name was a daunting task indeed.

As for myself it seems to speak of the cycle of life, death and rebirth with the black birds (crows or ravens?) In the branches of the dead tree and the earth mother figure below near the flowing water and a pregnant belly about to bring forth new life.

Shortly after this painting was done we were vending at an event at The Bath House on White Rock Lake in Dallas called FlowFest put on by Earth Rhythms, an organization which we are donating underwriters of. While there a young woman saw the painting and left, returning later with a gentleman to whom she pointed it out saying something that sounded like. Do you see? This is it! To which he nodded knowingly and quickly purchased the painting asking Em' to set it aside to be picked up later after the event and indeed it left with them that day.

When works like this come and go it leaves us to wonder. Was this painting specifically meant for this young couple for them to find on this day? What meaning did it have for them? Would they be keeping it or would it be a gift for someone they knew who would know exactly what it meant?

Sometimes the Muse comes into our lives and gives us that little spark of creativity so that we may make something that will touch the lives of others in ways we may never understand. Such is one of the many mysteries of life that we enjoy exploring and sharing...

How To Spot An Emily Dewbre-Young Work Of Art

Friends, neighbors and people we haven't met yet but look forward to becoming future friends with. :) It has come to our attention that some folks out there might have some of Eme's works and want to get in touch with her to see about collecting more or commissioning a new piece but may have trouble determining who they are looking for based on the signature on the piece. So, here's a post with most of the possible misreadings of her signature and an explanation of how to read a signed Emily Dewbre-Young piece of art for future reference.

If you have a painting or other artwork and the signature, usually in the lower right corner, looks like it may say Dewbre with a number and a paw print next to it then this is likely the artist you are looking for. The signature sometimes might seem to read as Dewbrey, Dewbry, Dewbres, Dewbreo, Dewbrell or Dewbree. The number will represent the year the original artwork was created. For example 10 for 2010, 11 for 2011 etc. If you have one that does not include the number and paw print it could very likely be one of her early works from the nineteen nineties.

Anyway, that's the gist of it so happy collecting! :)

There was this world famous painter. In the prime of her career, she started losing her eyesight. Fearful that she might lose her life as a painter, she went to see the best eye surgeon in the world.

After several weeks of delicate surgery and therapy, her eyesight was restored. The painter was so grateful that she decided to show her gratitude by repainting the doctor's office.

Part of her work included painting a gigantic eye on one wall. When she had finished her work, she held a press conference to unveil her latest work of art: the doctor's office.

During the press conference, one reporter noticed the eye on the wall, and asked the doctor, "What was your first reaction upon seeing your newly painted office, especially that large eye on the wall?"

To this, the eye doctor responded, "I said to myself 'Thank God I'm not a proctologist.'"

So, while doing a little Google searching to see how Emily's sites are doing in the rankings I tried a search for "artist Emily Young" and discovered there is a renowned British Sculptor by the same name who has done amazing work over the years that we didn't know about. She may have been the inspiration for a song written by Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett and has had her work displayed in public and private collections throughout the world.

Here's a heads up for those coming out to the Craft Fair at Downtown Arlington Farmer's Market tomorrow morning. Traffic on 360 will be a mess around Division so you might want to exit well ahead of that and cut on across to Collins to continue North or South (depending on which direction you are coming from. Until you get to Abrams or Division then head west. The address is 215 E Front Street Arlington, TX 76001.
Traffic Message has been issued by the Arlington Police Department (Texas).

Friday April 8, 2011 11:10 AM CDT

Motorists on SH 360 at Division are encouraged to take alternate routes this weekend; Lane closures, detours planned.
North and southbound State Highway 360 in Arlington at State Highway 180 will have lane closures and detours starting Friday, April 8, at 8 p.m., through Monday, April 11, 5 a.m., weather permitting.

Motorists on north and southbound SH 360 will be reduced to one lane and detoured from the highway at SH 180 for the construction of the railroad bridge spanning SH 360. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes.

During construction, northbound motorists will exit at Abram Street. After exiting, traffic will be directed east along Abram Street to Great Southwest Parkway where motorists will cross the Union Pacific Railroad. Detoured motorists will travel westbound on SH 180/Division Street to return to SH 360.
Southbound traffic will exit at SH 180/Division Street. After exiting, traffic will be directed west along SH 180/Division Street to Stadium Drive where motorists will cross the Union Pacific Railroad. Detoured motorists will travel eastbound on Abram Street to return to SH 360.

The construction is part of the $56 million project that is reconstructing the Division Street bridge and the railroad bridge. Included in the construction is the addition of shoulders on SH 360, improved ramp access at Division Street and new continuous frontage roads under the rail lines. Completion of the project is scheduled for summer 2012.

Earlier this year I responded to a Pay It Forward 2011 thingy on Facebook posted by Tony MonkeyMan Vrolijk and in it I agreed to make handmade or homemade items and send to the first 5 people who commented and they in turn would send such gifts to the 5 who responded to their status and so on. In the rules we were all given the whole of the year to get it done....well here's the text:

"Pay it Forward 2011: I promise to send something handmade/ homemade to the first 5 people who leave a comment here. They must, in turn, post this and send something they make to the first 5 people who comment on their status.(The rules are that it must be handmade/ homemade by you and it must be sent to your 5 people sometime in 2011.)"

So anyway, Emily and I have been working together on these and this Owl is one of the gifts for one of our friends. Think they'll like it?

We met this guy, Kyle MacConnell, who is an amazing musician by the way. He played the didgeridoo and guitar at the same time while our good friend Manda Sims danced. Anyway they were all performing at Health and Harmony House for their Valentines Day Dinner Party which we went to and thoroughly enjoyed. Restricted Viewing Settings on Facebook

PLEASE READ – THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO EVERYONE WHO USES FACEBOOK FOR BUSINESS OR PERSONAL REASONS.

Have you noticed that you are only seeing updates in your newsfeed from the same people lately? Have you also noticed that when you post things like status messages, photos and links, the same circle of people are commenting and everyone else seems to be ignoring you?
...

Don't worry, everyone still loves you and nobody has intentionally blocked you. The problem is that a large chunk of your friend/fan list can't see anything you post because the "New Facebook" has a newsfeed setting that, by default, is automatically set to ONLY SHOW POSTS FROM PEOPLE WHO YOU'VE RECENTLY INTERACTED WITH OR INTERACTED WITH THE MOST (which would be limited to the couple of weeks just before people started switching to the new profile).

So in other words, for both business and personal pages, unless your friends/fans commented on one of your posts within those few weeks or vice versa - you are now invisible to them and they are invisible to you!

HERE'S THE FIX:

Scroll down to the bottom of the Newsfeed on your HOME page and click on "Edit Options". In the popup, click on the dropdown menu next to 'Show posts from:' and select "All Of Your Friends and Pages" and then click Save.

Note: This is the fix for personal pages but I am unsure of whether or not the business pages are set up the same way.

Simply posting an update about it won't do any good because lots of your friends/fans already can't see your posts by default. You'll either have to send out a message to everyone on your list (which I'm not even sure business pages can do and is a rather tedious method) or post an event explaining the situation like this one and invite your entire fan base and/or friend list. You can also tweet about it hoping that most of your fellow facebookers are also on twitter.

PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SHARE THIS NOTE WITH AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN SO WE CAN TRY AND GET EVERYONE INFORMED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Anyone who isn't seeing your posts right now will never see them until they have changed their settings as explained above.

Now, sure, when you first get there they automatically set you up with a 20"x30" "Fine Art Print" for $49 and a nice $90 frame to display it in for $139 price altogether. If you're looking to buy in this price range the original painting is still for sale as of this posting in our Etsy Shop by the way. ;-)

But scroll down the list on the right and you will find "Photo Prints" tucked away down at the bottom for much more affordable prices. As some of our wonderful fans know we recently opened a shop on the incredible Etsy community. Well, within that community are teams of artisans and crafters who band together to help one another.
